Our goal is to have a site that will provide information to folks who aren”t familiar with us as well as to people who are regular customers.We will have information about Gene and I, our staff and our products. The Baker’’s blog will keep customers up to date about the product line and give advice about how to use these ingredients at home. Eventually, I want to expand the blog to include all kinds of food topics. It would be fun to explore all the different sources of fresh food in our community beginning at the Olympia Farmer’’s Market but certainly not ending there. Look for interviews with accomplished cooks, food historians and enthusiasts of exotic cuisines. Whew, sounds like a lot of work but for me it will be a labor of love.

Our gardens are a community resource in many different ways. Not only do they provide a soothing place to rest and eat, but they also have an educational value. Today, students from Washington Middle School came to the Bakery to research the plants in both the native garden and the perennial garden out front. They are going to do some landscaping at their school, they call it an outdoor classroom, and they wanted to see various examples of water wise vegetation. Ultimately, each student will study two different plants and then make a presentation to the other students about what they have learned. With this information the kids will make a plant list for their new garden. \r\n\r\nOur native plant demonstration garden is dormant right now, but don”t let that stop you from coming over to see how you can use native or water wise landscaping design in your own yard. There is an excellent publication available through the Native Plant Salvage Project called Winter in the Woods: A Winter Guide to Deciduous Plants in Western Washington, that gives detailed descriptions of trees and shrubs in their winter form. You will find that our garden requires little maintenance and no pesticides, provides bird habitat and is beautiful all year round. It’’s a sensible and appealing alternative to a conventional lawn.
